My approach

The way it should feel.

Most people come expecting something cold and clinical. What they find is the opposite—a process built around real conversation, genuine investment, and enough time to actually get it right.

I keep my caseload intentionally small, so every evaluation gets the attention it deserves. You work directly with me from start to finish, and I stay accessible after so the results actually translate to changes in your life.

About Alex

Alex M. Roberts, Ph.D.

I'm a licensed clinical psychologist with over a decade of experience across hospitals, schools, and private practice, and one of a relatively small number of psychologists in the country working at the intersection of clinical assessment, disability law, and high-stakes accommodations. That expertise now spans direct client work and consultation for licensing boards, credentialing agencies, and testing organizations nationwide.

The work I do requires precision. It also requires something harder to train: genuine investment in the person sitting across from you. I got knocked off course early in life and found my way through it. That experience shapes how I show up—for a parent searching for answers, a student whose future depends on getting the documentation right, or an institution that needs someone who won't get it wrong.

what to expect

How the process works

▪ Start with a call

We'll talk through concerns, what you're hoping testing will answer, and whether I'm the right fit. From there, I'll recommend the best evaluation.

▪ Complete evaluation

We'll schedule the evaluation, usually two to four sessions of interviews, testing, and other information needed to understand the full picture.

▪ Review results

We’ll meet to go over your results. You’ll receive a detailed and individualized written report, and I’ll connect you to relevant supports and providers.

Beyond Evaluations

Professional Consulting

I consult with psychologists, institutions, and licensing or testing bodies that need a seasoned eye on complex cases, and I also review documentation for students and professionals preparing requests where the standard is high and the margin for error is small.

• Documentation review and advisement
• Peer consultation for psychologists
• Institutional consultation and training

FAQ

  • A comprehensive assessment of how your brain works—covering IQ, academic skills, attention, memory, executive functioning, and emotional and behavioral functioning.

It typically includes face-to-face testing, a diagnostic interview, developmental history, records review, and input from parents or teachers. Results are used to develop diagnoses, treatment recommendations, learning plans, and accommodation documentation.

  • Evaluations are:

    ∙ $2500—Diagnostic Testing
    ∙ $2800—Psychoeducational Testing
    ∙ $3000—Exam Accommodations

For evaluations outside Kansas City, travel and lodging are added based on location and length of stay.

I don’t accept insurance. Working privately allows for a more thorough, individualized evaluation without the constraints insurance places on testing, diagnosis, or documentation. It also means your results aren’t automatically added to a permanent medical record.

After your evaluation, I can provide a "Super Bill" for you to submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

  • If something feels off (at school, at work, or in daily life) and you haven’t been able to get a clear answer, testing is often the right next step.

It’s also worth considering if treatment hasn’t led to meaningful improvement, if you need documentation for accommodations, or if you want a clearer understanding of how you or your child thinks and learns.

  • No, psychologists don’t prescribe medication in Florida or Missouri.

If medication might be helpful, I work closely with psychiatrists and other prescribing providers and can connect you with someone I trust.

  • Some adult evaluations can be completed fully virtually, including psychiatric, ADHD, and (with a prior consult) autism evaluations.

For all other evaluations, including all child evaluations, at least some in-person work is required.

Intake and feedback appointments can be completed virtually for any evaluation.

  • There’s no waitlist. Most clients begin testing within two weeks of their initial inquiry.

Feedback sessions are typically scheduled 7–10 days after testing is complete. If you’re working against a deadline, expedited review is available.
